What is the project?

The FaRS Outcomes project developed and tested a standardised methodology to demonstrate outcomes for clients receiving FaRS counselling services. This project was established by the Relationships Australia National Research Network and funded by the Relationships Australia Federation. The project incorporated a co-design approach with clients and practitioners to identify relevant and realistic outcomes and appropriate tools for outcome measurement. This project aimed to provide evidence of the effectiveness of FaRS interventions and use evaluation to establish the cost effectiveness and benefits of these programs. It helped establish links between how complex client realities affect client outcomes. It also went towards establishing a research base to support clinical practice in the family and relationship services sector. This project was managed by RA South Australia.

What are Family and Relationship Services (FaRS)?

Family and Relationship Services, otherwise known as FaRS, refers to a collection of counselling services practiced across the RA Federation. Family and Relationship Services (FaRS) is a sub-activity under the Families and Children (FaC) Activity of the Families and Communities Program. They include programs which strengthen family relationships, prevent relationship breakdown and ensure the wellbeing and safety of children. In addition, the project included results from the Family Law (FLC) Counselling services, which address the emotional impact of separation, due to similarities across these service spectrums.

Results

The project has developed a national outcomes framework which supports the use of routine outcome measurement across FaRS and FLC services. More complex data analysis and writing of the results is currently underway.
